Meet our Pupils
For an insight into pupillage at 5RB, we asked our former pupil, Yuli Takatsuki, a few questions:
Where did you go to university and what did you study?
I started studying Philosophy, and then switched to Politics, at Cambridge.
Why did you choose 5RB?
It was a simple choice. 5RB are the leaders in the field - you only need to scan a list of cases they have been involved in to see that. I also did a mini-pupillage at 5RB, which made me really want to come back.
What's the best thing about pupillage?
Learning and achieving more than you ever thought you were capable of. Also, realising that you are not just a hindrance to Chambers but can be a very valuable resource to your pupil supervisor.
What's the worst?
Making the inevitable mistakes and then magnifying them a hundred-fold in your mind. It’s easy to say, but try to relax and keep things in perspective. Otherwise a year will feel like a very long time!
Was pupillage what you were expecting?
Yes. The work was mostly paper-based and centred on defamation and breach of privacy cases. However, there were plenty of opportunities to observe advocacy in court and to gain experience in other areas of law. There were two points during the year at which my written work and advocacy were formally assessed.
What advice would you give to potential applicants?
Don’t assume that in order to apply you need to be International Mooting Champion of the Year, or a Harvard Law Professor. Focus on your strengths and try to distinguish yourself from the crowd. A genuine interest in media law and some experience in the field will help to give you the edge over other applicants.
