Sports Law
As a result of the growing commercial importance of sport, a diverse and important area of law has been established. Members of 5RB have acted for sports personalities, sporting bodies and commercial interests associated with sport. The well-recognised strengths of 5RB in defamation and associated fields lend themselves to reputation management and the protection of privacy of sports personalities.
Members of 5RB have regularly acted in high profile disputes concerning sports personalities in these fields of law. 5RB also focuses on other key aspects of sports law: disciplinary tribunal work and intellectual property. Members of 5RB act in proceedings before disciplinary panels and advise on the fairness of such procedures and their compliance with the HRA.
The intellectual property expertise centres on dispute resolution (including ADR) in copyright, trademark and passing off matters in a sports context, e.g. image rights, sponsorship rights, broadcasting rights and associated contract work. The work in image rights includes complaints to authorities such as OFCOM.
Members of 5RB belong to the BASL (British Association for Sport and Law) and (ARDL) the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers.
