Misery memoir jury rejects claim
The barrister and part-time judge Constance Briscoe, has successfully defended a libel claim brought by her mother in respect of her misery memoir “Ugly”.
In the book Ms Briscoe accused her mother, the claimant Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell, of abuse and neglect. Ms Briscoe-Mitchell sued both Ms Briscoe and the publishers calling the allegations “a piece of fiction”.
Following a 10 day trial, the jury returned an unanimous verdict in favour of Ms Briscoe.
