Rape arrest injunction lifted

Court lifts injunction preventing reporting of billionaire's arrest following statement in US

On the evening of 10 November 2017, a court discharged an injunction against News Group Newspapers preventing The Sun from reporting the arrest of US tech investor Shervin Pishevar on suspicion of rape.

In June this year Mr Pishevar, a significant investor in Uber, was arrested at the Ned Hotel in London after an allegation of rape was made. Mr Pishevar sought an injunction to stop The Sun from reporting the arrest. The Sun then provided undertakings not to report the story until trial.

A few weeks later City of London Police confirmed that the investigation had been dropped and there would be no further action taken against the man.

Last week information about the case was reported in the US in respect of proceedings Mr Pishevar had issued, and he issued a statement referring to the arrest. He said he was innocent of all allegations and had been the victim of a smear campaign. This prompted an urgent application by News Group to lift the injunction, to which Mr Pishevar consented.

5RB‘s Adam Wolanski acted for News Group Newspapers.
