Hamiltons settle with Max Clifford

Publicist to pay damages and costs

Max Clifford has paid Neil and Christine Hamilton undisclosed damages and costs to settle their libel and slander claims brought in relation to false allegations of rape made against the couple by hoaxer Nadine Milroy Sloan.

Mr Clifford withdrew what he admitted to have been “highly offensive and damaging” comments about the allegations made to newspapers and on television in August 2001, although he stopped short of apologising.  In 2003, after it emerged that the allegations were a complete fabrication, Ms Milroy Sloan was sentenced to three years imprisonment for perverting the course of justice.

The settlement comes after a judgment of Eady J last summer struck out significant parts of Clifford’s defence.  Estimates of the total figure to be paid are around £100,000, although the former Tory MP called that figure “a wild underestimate”.
