Libel success for President of Sikh Gurdwara

Punjabi newspaper pays £160,000 in damages and costs

Gurmail Singh Malhi, the President of London’s largest Sikh Gurdwara, (Sri Guru Singh Sabha) has succeeded in his libel complaint against Des Pardes Weekly (which describes itself as the UK and Europe’s first and most popular Punjabi newspaper).

The libel proceedings were brought over the publication by Des Pardes Weekly of a number of advertisements submitted by third parties which contained false allegations that Mr Malhi was a child abuser who posed a serious threat to children.

Des Pardes Weekly has accepted that there is no basis for the allegations, published a full apology in the newspaper, both in English and Punjabi, and paid Mr Malhi £160,000 by way of damages and legal costs.
