Jonathan Barnes appointed to QC

5RB congratulates Jonathan on his appointment as Queen's Counsel

5RB is delighted that Jonathan Barnes is included in the announcement of new QCs for 2021.

Jonathan has spent his entire career at the Bar with 5RB – joining as a pupil in 1999. Before that he was a solicitor with City firm Richards Butler and spent time on secondment to the BBC.  Jonathan acted for the Claimants in NT1 & NT2 v Google LLC leading to the first “right to be forgotten” de-listing order made against Google in the UK.  With Victoria Jolliffe he recently represented the respondent employees in the seminal Morrisons Supreme Court appeal concerning data protection and its relationship with vicarious liability.

This year Legal 500 presciently said of Jonathan, ‘In the field of data protection, he has no equal, certainly not at the junior Bar. It is a wonder he is not a silk.

Desmond Browne CBE QC adds, “Everyone at 5RB is delighted by the news that Jonathan has been granted silk. No one can doubt how very well deserved it is. His advocacy as a junior in the Morrisons’ litigation showed the Supreme Court that he was a QC in waiting.”

The new Queen’s Counsel announced today will formally become silks in March 2021.
