Conference5RB workshop preview

Reporting Restrictions and Contempt Update

Conference5RB will be held on 29 September 2022.

Over the coming weeks we will feature snippets of the workshop sessions offered at this year’s conference.

Presenters Adam Wolanski QC, Gervase de Wilde and Gemma McNeil-Walsh are running a session entitled “Reporting Restrictions Update”. Since the last 5RB conference there have been a number of important developments in this field, including on the following topics:

• The production and protection of journalistic sources in both criminal and civil trials, following the decisions in Vardy v Rooney [2022] EWHC 1209 (QB) and R (BBC) v Newcastle Crown Court [2019] EWHC 2756;

• Anonymity orders in civil, criminal and quasi-criminal proceedings, including whether corporate blackmail victims can obtain anonymity following the decision in R v Nigel Wright (Ruling on Anonymity) [2020] EW Misc 22 (CCrimC);

• The reporting of proceedings in the Family Court, particularly in financial remedies cases following a series of recent significant decisions by Mr Justice Mostyn , including Gallagher v Gallagher (No 2) [2022] EWFC 53 and Xanthopolous v Rakshina [2022] EWFC 30.
