Dame Victoria Sharp sworn in as a Lady Justice of Appeal

Former libel silk joins the Court of Appeal

Former 1 Brick Court libel silk Dame Victoria Sharp was today sworn in as a Lady Justice of Appeal.

After graduating from Bristol University, Victoria Sharp joined 1 Brick Court in 1982 and took silk in 2001. She was appointed as a Recorder in 1998 and a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division on 13 January 2009. She has been a Presiding Judge on the Western Circuit since 2012.

As a recognised leader in the field of defamation and media law, Victoria Sharp was involved in numerous important cases including Lord Browne v Associated Newspapers Ltd, Lowe v Associated Newspapers Ltd and Curistan v Times Newspapers Ltd.

Lady Justice Sharp was sworn in before new Lord Chief Justice Thomas, with the new head of the Queen’s Bench Division, Lord Justice Leveson and Chancellor of the High Court, Sir Terence Etherton. The court was packed with members of the bar, judges from High Court and Court of Appeal and Lady Justice Sharp’s family.
