Vice Chairman of Bar announced

Desmond Browne QC to take up post in January 2008

The Bar Council has announced its officers for 2008 and Joint-Head of 5RB, Desmond Browne QC has been elected as Vice-Chairman of the Bar.

Desmond Browne has been Chairman of the Bar Council’s Working Group on the Legal Services Bill, which is expected to conclude its passage through Parliament next week.

The Vice-Chairman usually becomes Chairman in the following year so; in that event Desmond Browne will be Chairman of the Bar for 2009.

He commented: “This is a great honour, which I never imagined would happen. I shall be continuing in practice, and am very keen to maintain full membership of 5RB and links with its clients. On the assumption that I am elected Chairman for 2009, I hope that the challenges of the job will not prevent me from keeping up an advisory practice. I promise to be back full-time at the end of that year.”

The full list of officers is

  • Chairman: Timothy Dutton QC
  • Vice-Chairman: Desmond Browne QC
  • Treasurer: Andrew Mitchell QC
