Sir Christopher Meyer, the chairman of the Press Complaints Commision has called into question the validity of the recent Media Standards Trust report which heavily criticised the PCC.
In a letter to MST board member Anthony Salz, Meyer claimed that the report, A More Accountable Press, contained several inaccuracies and "did not appear to have been written by anyone with much understanding of self-regulation, or the relationship between the PCC and the law."
Whilst accepting that there was "room for improvement" at the PCC, Meyer questioned the quality and integrity of the report.
A MST spokesman said: "We are pleased to have kick-started a debate on the effectiveness of press self-regulation."
