5RB - Leading barristers' chambers specialising in all areas of Media & Communications Law

How To Instruct Us

5RB is home to some of the leading experts in media and communications law. If you or your client are facing an issue that touches on any aspect of media and communications law, we encourage you to contact us as early as possible.

Our members of 5RB accept instructions from:

  • Solicitors and other practising lawyers;
  • Licensed Access clients, who may either hold a licence issued by the Bar Standards Board, or be a member of a professional body that has been recognised by the Bar Standards Board; and
  • Members of the public who wish to instruct a barrister under the Public Access scheme.

If you wish to instruct our barristers or have a general enquiry about how the process on instructing a barrister works, please contact our clerks.

Fees & Pricing Models

Our experienced clerking team handle all fees charged by members of 5RB and will be happy to discuss your requirements, explain the options available and provide a tailored fee estimate or quotation based on the particular circumstances of your case.

Fees are agreed on a case-by-case basis. The fee agreed for any particular piece of work will depend on a range of factors, including the complexity, importance and urgency of the matter, the value of the claim, the volume and nature of the documentation, the experience and seniority of the barrister instructed, the amount of preparation required, and the anticipated duration of the work to be undertaken.

The pricing models most commonly used at 5RB include:

  • Fixed fees for defined pieces of work, such as written advice, drafting, conferences, mediations and individual hearings.
  • Brief fees and refreshers for court hearings and trials, reflecting the preparation required together with the length and complexity of the hearing.
  • Hourly rates for advisory work, drafting, conferences and other matters where the scope of work cannot readily be defined in advance. In such cases, estimates can often be provided.

In appropriate cases, alternative fee arrangements may be considered, including conditional fee agreements.

If you receive a quote and there is something you do not understand or wish to discuss further, please contact either the clerk who has been handling your enquiry or the Senior Clerk, Andrew Love.

Timescales

Timescales for litigation, advice or other instruction can vary depending on factors such as barristers’ availability, the type and complexity of the case or matter, the other side’s litigation strategy and court listing times.

Our Standard Contractual Terms

Barristers practise as sole practitioners and are registered with the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales. Members offer their services in accordance with the Bar Standards Code of Conduct. The standard contractual terms on which services are provided can be found here.
