New High Court Judges appointed

1 Brick Court’s Victoria Sharp QC and Andrew Nicol QC of Doughty Street Chambers have been appointed to the High Court bench.


After graduating from Bristol University, Victoria Sharp joined 1 Brick Court in 1982 and took silk in 2001. She was appointed as a Recorder in 1998 and as a Deputy High Court Judge in 2007.


Andrew Nicol was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1978 and took silk in 1995. He was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and subsequently as a deputy High Court Judge.


As a recognised leader in the field of defamation and media law, Victoria Sharp was involved in numerous important cases including Lord Browne v Associated Newspapers Ltd, Lowe v Associated Newspapers Ltd and Curistan v Times Newspapers Ltd.


Andrew Nicol, who was also highly regarded for his human rights and public law work, is the co-editor with Geoffrey Robertson QC of Media Law and with Gavin Millar QC of Media Law and Human Rights. He represented the media in a wide variety of cases related to contempt, journalistic sources and reporting restrictions.


Both Ms Sharp and Mr Nicol have been appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division.
