MLRC returns to London

The Media Law Resource Centre, returns to London from 16-19 September 2007, for its annual conference which will take place at Stationers’ Hall.

The not-for-profit organisation was founded by US media organisations to monitor developments and promote First Amendment rights in the libel, privacy and related legal fields. The conference draws together delegates and speakers from across the world for perhaps the most influential gathering of global media lawyers.

This year the conference in London will include talks and workshops on developments in privacy and libel in the UK, criminal liability for the press, media law in Asia and new media challenges. Judge Rozakis of the ECtHR will give the keynote address on the privacy law jurisprudence of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Giving a perspective on Australian and Asian media law, Justice Henric Nicholas from the Supreme Court of New South Wales will introduce a session with contributions from leading lawyers from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Australia.

The conference will be attended by a number of members of 5RB and Matthew Nicklin will feature in the closing session, a debate on privacy law presided over by Mr Justice Tugendhat. Together with Michael Beloff QC, they will speak in support of the motion “This House believes the press has no right to pry into the private lives of public figures”. Their opponents in the debate will be two US lawyers: Kelli Sager from Davis Wright Tremaine and Charles S. Sims from Proskauer Rose.
