Blairs win privacy payout

The Daily Mail has paid “substantial damages” in an out-of-court settlement with former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and his wife Cherie after the newspaper published photographs of the Blairs on holiday in the Caribbean.

The Blairs complained that their privacy had been infringed after long-lens photographs were taken of them in “secluded and private places” on holiday at Cliff Richard’s villa in Barbados were published in the Daily Mail.

The Lawyer reported today that damages won by the Blairs were to be paid to several charities.

The Blairs’ solicitor Graham Atkins said: “They have always accepted a certain level of media scrutiny, particularly whilst Tony Blair was prime minister but ultimately they and their family have the right to a private life. In this matter, the photographers over-stepped the mark and this must be a good result for those in the public eye generally.”

5RB‘s David Sherborne was acting for Mr & Mrs Blair instructed by Atkins Solicitors.
