Keynote – Professor Rachael Mulheron KC (Hon)
Rachael is a legal academic and Professor of Tort Law and Civil Justice at Queen Mary University of London. From 2009 to 2018, she was a member of the Civil Justice Council where she served on the Working Group on what became the Defamation Act 2013, and also served as well as a member of the Working Group which prepared a report for the implementation of the Leveson Enquiry’s recommendation for ‘Costs Protection for Defamation and Related Claims.’
Rachael has written extensively about defamation and privacy as part of her popular text, Principles of Tort Law (2nd edn, Cambridge University Press, 2020). Since 2004, her public engagement work has focussed particularly on collective or class action jurisprudence. Currently, she is very interested in the potential impact of the Supreme Court’s decision in Lloyd v Google LLC. She was sworn in as an honorary Queen’s Counsel in November 2021.

Closing session – Dr. Maggie Semple OBE
Formerly an academic, Maggie began advising governments in the 1990s. She has been a member of several high-profile UK Government and European Union task groups and represented the UK in Greece and Hong Kong. From 1997-2001 Maggie was Director of the Learning Experience at the Millennium Dome and from 2001-2008, a Civil Service Commissioner responsible for upholding the values of appointment on merit.
Maggie established The Experience Corps Ltd (TEC), a global consultancy firm in 2001. In 2010, she founded Semple, a fashion brand comprising a luxury bespoke womenswear business with a working atelier in Covent Garden, London, an online magazine with over 8m viewers and an events programme.
In 2020 Maggie co-founded I-Cubed Group Ltd, a strategic advisory company that works with organisations on issues to do with race and in October 2021 she co-authored My Little Black Book: A Blacktionary.
Maggie serves on a range of Boards. She is a Non-Executive Director of Phoenix Group plc, Jamaica National Bank UK Ltd, member of University of Cambridge HR Committee and member of Queen’s Counsel Selection Panel. Maggie also leads the Black British Voices Project (BBVP) in partnership with the University of Cambridge.
Maggie is a Fellow of the City & Guilds Institute, one of 500 Fellowships awarded since 1878, is cited in International Who’s Who and was awarded an OBE in 2001. In June 2022, Maggie became an Honorary Bencher of Middle Temple Inn.
