UPDATED – Conference5RB 2016 Programme

Conference5RB 2016 will take place on Thursday, 29 September 2016 at IET Savoy Place, Savoy Place, London WC2R 0BL.

Conference5RB will be accredited with 6.5 hours CPD, and will provide an update on a wide variety of areas of media law.

Our keynote speaker will be Sir Alan Moses, Chairman of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) and former Lord Justice of Appeal.

In addition to the keynote speech, the programme will include the following sessions:

1.A plenary session in which the panel will discuss current defamation issues. Moderated by Desmond Browne QC, the panel will include: Justin Rushbrooke QC, William Bennett and Felicity McMahon.

2.A plenary session in which the panel will discuss current privacy, harassment and Data Protection Act issues. Moderated by Adrienne Page QC, the panel will include: David Sherborne, Christina Michalos and Greg Callus.

Two workshop sessions, of which delegates are asked to choose one for each (workshops are subject to change):

Workshop Session 1 – 14.30-15.45

A. The early stages of a defamation claim – This workshop will run in Session 1 only and will cover:

• Proving serious harm – More in-depth analysis of cases discussed in plenary session; how to plead and prove;
• Whether to seek a preliminary issue and, if so, on what issues;
• Obtaining pre-action disclosure
• Choosing which defences to run

B/E. Privacy and Open Justice – This session will cover:

• Recent reporting restriction decisions in the criminal, civil and family courts
• Reporting arrests and charges: privacy and reputational issues

F. Protecting Corporates and Public Officials – This session will cover:

• Putting an end to campaigns of vilification
• Harassment injunctions (Cheshire West, Merlin Entertainments)

• Recent decisions on damages in privacy and DPA claims, including Representative Claimants v MGN (Gulati v MGN)
• The factors that are relevant to assessing the level of the award
• Comparisons with the assessment of damages in other fields including defamation and harassment
