On 21 August 2026, Mr Justice Nicklin awarded Associated Newspapers Ltd costs on the indemnity basis of its successful defence of the claims brought by Baroness Lawrence and others. He also ordered the Claimants to make an interim payment on account of those costs of £9,544,355 by 28 August 2026. The judge found that the Court had jurisdiction, in principle, to make an order that costs otherwise subject to assessment should be subject to a quantified ceiling or “cap” but declined to impose a cap in the circumstances of the case. The judgment can be found here.
