Frank Warren wins libel damages

Frank Warren was today awarded £50,000 libel damages in the High Court over allegations made by a Scottish promoter and manager, Alex Morrison, in March 2013, which were reported widely in the national and sporting press.

At the centre of the libel dispute were false allegations about the reasons for the postponement of Ricky Burns’ fight against Miguel Vasquez. The claim was initially defended by Morrison but, following an ‘unless’ order which was not complied with, judgment was entered against him in January 2014.

Awarding Frank Warren damages of £50,000, Master Eastman said that the allegations were a “serious attack” upon the reputation of Frank Warren. The Master also noted a number of aggravating features of the case, including Morrison’s conduct towards Warren after judgment had been entered.

In addition to damages, Frank Warren was awarded under CPR Part 36 an additional amount of £5,000, plus indemnity costs and interest on costs and damages.

5RB’s Adrienne Page QC (instructed by Hill Dickinson) represented Frank Warren.
