News Of The World in phone tap claims

The Guardian newspaper claims that journalists at the News of the World have used private investigators to listen into the calls of many high profile public figures in pursuit of their stories.  Those alleged to have been tapped include Gwyneth Paltrow, George Michael, Alex Ferguson and other senior politicians.

The allegations centre on police reports of cases brought against the News of the World in relation to phone tapping, which the Guardian reported had been settled out-of-court for over £1 million.

Scotland Yard said it would not be reopening investigations.

News International, the parent company of News Group, said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on the allegations at this time.

5RB‘s Matthew Nicklin appeared on BBC2’s Newsnight last night to discuss the claims: see it here.
