The trial of liability in Clarke v Guardian News and Media will begin today before Mrs Justice Steyn. The trial is due to last six weeks and this is the most substantial libel action to be tried in recent years.
The claim concerns eight articles published by the Guardian in 2021 and 2022. Mr Clarke brings his claim in libel and data protection and the focus of the trial will be the defendant’s defences of truth and public interest.
Alexandra Marzec and Ben Gallop, instructed by Wiggin LLP, have acted for GNM throughout and at trial.
