Sir Charles Gray

Sir Charles Gray 1942 - 2022

5RB has learnt with great regret of the death of Sir Charles Gray.

Joint Head of Chambers Desmond Browne QC said:

I was terribly sad to receive the news that Charles died yesterday.  Sir Charles Gray’s extraordinary charm made him an exceptional advocate, whether before judges or juries. He was certainly the best we have had in the defamation field in my years in practice.  It is not surprising that Lord Bingham told Lord Aldington that there was only one advocate he should be trying to instruct for the Tolstoy case, and the jury’s huge award in damages proved the wisdom of the advice.  As a Judge he was without exception a pleasure to appear before, and his detailed judgment in the Irving case was so authoritative that it was brought out in paperback.
