Privacy Cases Double Over Four Years

According to figures released by Thomson Reuters, the number of reported cases per year in which a privacy argument was used has doubled since 2009-10. The new statistics show that there were 56 reported cases involving privacy in the twelve-month period ending on 31 May 2014, compared to 26 cases in the same period ending on 31 May 2010. The number has consistently increased year on year, with 40 cases in 2010-11, 45 in 2011-12 and 55 in 2012-13. The increase most likely reflects the wider use of privacy arguments in more recent years and the ongoing phonehacking litigation. The figures are calculated by Thomson Reuters on the basis of reported cases in the High Court or above.
