Hannah Gilliland joined 5RB in 2023, following the successful completion of her pupillage.

She accepts instructions across all areas of Chambers’ practice, including defamation, privacy, information law, harassment and data protection. Hannah gives pre-publication advice to The Daily Mail as well as to a leading publishing house.

Prior to joining 5RB, Hannah worked as a paralegal at a leading media law firm and as a visiting lecturer in tort law at City, University of London for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Before this, Hannah studied Human, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a first. She studied the GDL, passing with distinction and ranking 5th in the year, and the Bar Professional Training Course at City, University of London.

Berg v Jones [2026] EWHC 564 (KB)

Acted for D in a trial of preliminary issues led by Aidan Eardley KC. Successfully obtained a finding of opinion in relation to allegations of bias in BBC News Reporting.

Kamal v Tax Policy Associates Ltd & Ords [2026] EWHC 551 (KB)

Acted for Ds, led by Greg Callus, to successfully strike out an £8 million libel claim brought against Dan Neidle and Tax Policy Associated Ltd. In a legal first, the High Court declared the claim to be a ‘statutory SLAPP’.

Acted for a major media organisation in relation to a libel claim brought by a politician (led by Catrin Evans KC and Jonathan Scherbel-Ball).

Acted for Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools in a three-day trial before the First Tier-Tribunal in relation to a Freedom of Information request (led by Felicity McMahon).

Acted for C, led by Jonathan Barnes KC, in a breach of contract and harassment claim brought by a company against its former managing director. Appeared in the High Court led on three occasions, including to successfully resist an application for contempt of court made against C2.

Yang Tengbo (Formerly H6) v Secretary of State for the Home Department Appeal No: SC/205/2023

Acted for various media organisations in this high-profile case seeking access to court documents including a witness statement written by an aide to Prince Andrew in support of an alleged Chinese spy (led by Adam Wolanski KC). This case was widely covered in the press.
