Welcome to our newest tenant, Samuel Rowe, and farewell to Desmond Browne CBE KC

We are pleased to announce that Samuel Rowe has been offered tenancy after successful completion of pupillage. From 11th April 2023, Samuel joined 5RB as our 34th member of chambers. His supervisors were Victoria Simon-Shore and David Hirst.

Prior to joining 5RB, Samuel was a researcher and co-author of the Independent Review of the Governance of Biometric Data (The Ryder Review), commissioned by the Ada Lovelace Institute, which focussed on the legal framework for the processing and governance of biometric data in England and Wales. He also worked in the legal and policy team at a rapidly-growing digital identity company, advising on legal and policy issues, as well as representing the company to policymakers and lawmakers. Samuel received his MSc Social Science of the Internet from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.

Samuel advises on all areas of Chambers’ practice, including defamation, malicious falsehood, privacy, data protection and harassment. Please view Samuel’s profile here.

Joint Heads of Chambers Adrienne Page KC and Jane Phillips said:

“We are delighted to welcome Samuel and have no doubt that he will be a valuable addition to 5RB. We are sure that our clients will quickly recognise his talent.”

On a separate note, as one door opens, another one closes and we bid fond farewell to Desmond Browne CBE KC who, after a year of Associate Membership, has decided to retire fully from practice.

5RB’s Joint Heads of Chambers said:

“It is impossible to put into words the huge contribution Desmond has made to the law in our field, as a giant of the defamation Bar, and to 5RB both in his 54 years as a member and his 19 years as Head of Chambers during which he took 5RB from strength-to-strength. He will be sorely missed and we wish him a most enjoyable and well-earned retirement.”
