The University of Sussex has today apologised “unreservedly” to Michael Segalov, an ex-student, following allegations of criminal behaviour published by the University in two online news bulletins in December 2013.
Mr Segalov, who is now a freelance journalist and legal researcher, but was a law student at the University at the time of the publications, was accused of committing serious acts of criminal behaviour at student protests which took place on campus in November and December 2013 against the privatisation of University services. The bulletins claimed he was guilty of having committed acts of theft, intimidation, violence, and of causing damage to University property.
Although Mr Segalov had attended the protests, he did not lead or organise any part of the protests, commit any criminal acts, or encourage others to do so.
In addition to today’s Statement in Open Court, which was provided as part of the unqualified offer of amends made by the University, the University has also agreed to pay Mr Segalov £20,000 in damages and publish an additional apology on the University’s website.
