Vine v Barton: trial of preliminary issues

Today the High Court will hear argument in a preliminary issue trial in a libel and harassment claim brought by Jeremy Vine, the presenter and journalist, against Joey Barton, the former professional footballer and manager.

Mr Vine’s claim in libel is brought over 12 posts on X; a hashtag that became a trending topic on X in the UK; and a post on the “GoFundMe” platform.

Steyn J will determine the natural and ordinary meaning of the publications complained of in libel; whether the meanings found are statements of fact or opinion; and whether they are defamatory of Mr Vine at common law.

5RB’s Gervase de Wilde and Luke Browne appear for the Claimant, instructed by Samuels Solicitors LLP.
