Recent highlights include Mueen-Uddin v Home Secretary [2024] UKSC 21 (libel; GDPR; Jameel and Hunter abuse), WFZ v BBC [2024] EWHC 376 (privacy; contempt; collateral use of witness statements), Taylor v Evans v Murphy [2023] EWHC 935 (conspiracy to injure; breach of confidence; GDPR, unincorporated associations) and Fearn v Tate [2022] UKSC 4 (privacy; private nuisance).
Over 30 years of practice in the field of defamation Jacob has acted for clients across all sectors and walks of life, protecting threatened reputations or the right to speak freely. As well as mainstream media organisations, whether print, broadcast or online, his corporate clients come from the world of finance, retail, manufacturing, advertising, education, hospitality and information technology. His individual clients have included politicians, public officials, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, actors, journalists, authors, teachers, influencers and many more.
Lead counsel in the Supreme Court succeeding in reinstating a libel and data protection claim which had been struck out on grounds of Hunter and Jameel abuse.
Jacob has acted in very many privacy claims throughout his practice.
A claim concerning a leak of an internal Labour Party report into anti-semitism.
Jacob is regularly instructed on urgent matters seeking, or resisting, injunctive relief in privacy and harassment claims.
Acted for well-known entertainer in obtaining injunction to restrain blackmail threats over false allegations of sexual misconduct.
Acted for defendant in discharging interim privacy injunction on the grounds of material non-disclosure.
In the earlier years of his practice Jacob gave pre-publication advice to many national newspapers and many other publishing organisations. He has extensive experience of advising both on threats to restrain intended publication and the options open to subjects of such threatened publication.
Jacob has extensive experience of reporting restriction issues in the King’s Bench Division, in the Family Division and in the Employment Tribunal. By their nature, few such cases are reported.
